Helen E. (Joy) Mylen, obituary
AUBURN — Helen E. (Joy) Mylen, 81, peacefully slipped away to join the Lord on February 20, 2026. Born in Lubec, Maine, she was the daughter of H. Bernice (Small) Joy and Alfred L. Joy. She was the youngest of three children and shared her early years with her siblings, Hubert and Gloria.
Helen worked for many years in the woolen mills and later served as a corrections officer until her retirement. She carried herself with a unique mix of warmth and grit—sweet as pie, yet tough as nails when needed—and it earned her respect wherever she went.
In her earlier years, Helen was happiest with a guitar in her hands, singing with whoever happened to be gathered around the table. She loved camping, gardening, and being outdoors. She embraced new experiences, including taking motorcycle rides and going out lobstering.
Her compassion extended far beyond her immediate circle. As an advocate for those living with COPD like herself, she created a Facebook support group that became a source of comfort, information, and encouragement for many. Her strong Christian faith guided her daily life, and she was known for lifting others up with her words, her prayers, and her steady presence.
Helen dearly loved her family, holding each of them close to her heart.
She is survived by her children, whom she shared with Charles Colson, Sr.: Debra Colson‑Bernier, Chuck Colson and his wife Susie, Jeff Colson and his wife Hope, and Jen Colson whom she embraced and cherished as a daughter. She leaves behind grandchildren Taylor Colson, Bethany Bernier, Nicole Hennessy, Michele Colson, Joshua Colson, Nathan Colson, Shane Colson, Christina Proctor, Jacob Colson, Dominic Colson, and Nevaeh Colson, as well as many great‑grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Hubert Joy; her sister, Gloria Owens; her daughter Elaine Colson; and her beloved dog, Buddy, who was never far from her side.
Helen’s life was defined by love, resilience, faith, and a generous heart. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the home of her daughter Debra, on March 21, 2026, at 1 p.m.
A funeral service will follow on June 12, 2026, at 10 a.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland, with a committal service immediately afterward at Acorn Cemetery.
