ROCKLAND — As part of the nationwide “Fall of Freedom” – a nationwide movement of creative resistance uniting artists, cultural spaces, and communities across the U.S. against censorship and authoritarian overreach – Maine playwright, theater artist and activist Michael Gorman and his group The Forty Hour Club will partner with Wabanaki activists Sandra and Harley Basset in the presentation of "The Greatest Golfer That Ever Lived!", a short theatrical performance and act of resistance that explores the unnatural forces of ego, greed and displacement versus a harmonious relationship between people and land. 

Part absurdist parody and part historic indictment, according to a news release, the free performance will take place Saturday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m., at The Forty Hour Clubs' large-scale environmental art installation and exhibition "A Hole For One!—America 250 Reimagined” currently on display in The Steel House Amphitheater in Rockland. The performance is the culminating event of the exhibition, which will be on display indefinitely, according to a news release. The exhibition is a selected project of The Maine Arts Commission.

This event is free and open to the public. Rain date Sunday, October 4, at 2 p.m. Steel House Amphitheater (on the waterfront) 639 Main Street (across from Home Kitchen Café).

Now in its second year, Fall of Freedom encourages artists and audiences to stand together in creative resistance against fascist repression and censorship with joyful communities of defiant creativity. A group of artists including visual artist Dread Scott, playwright Lynn Nottage, and novelist Hari Kunzru are calling for events beginning October 2-4.

Galleries, museums, libraries, comedy clubs, theaters, and concert halls across the country will host exhibitions, performances, and public events that channel the urgency of this moment—each independently organized but united in their defense of expression, art, and democracy.
