In final visit of year to Belfast shipwreck, students participate in scavenger wreck hunt
As part of the Belfast Marine Institute's Floating Classroom initiative, BAHS students in Chip Lagerbom's Archaeology class recently returned to the Passagassawakeag shipwreck for their final visit of the year to the hulk.
Now that they are familiar with the wreck, this time the visit was for a competitive scavenger hunt. They were divided into three teams and raced each other to make measurements such as of the widest part of the ship and so on, count the stringers on the port side, count the stringers on the starboard side, take photos of certain ship parts such as the mast step and keelson as well as an example of where scarfing had been done.
Finally, they had to pose for group selfies at the bow and stern respectively (having identified which was which). The event was timed so the first team to turn in all the required pieces AND with the correct information won the competition.
A WABI-TV news reporter was on hand to film the proceedings and interview many of the students.
It was a beautiful weather day, the foreshore shipwreck was well displayed with the low tide and the students made good use of their limited time to complete the scavenger hunt tasks.
