CAMDEN — Edward “Ned” Leopold Gruener, 92, of Camden, died at his home on August 30, 2026. Born in Boston, Massachusetts on October 9, 1933, he was the son of Leopold and Margaret (Lyman ) Gruener. He graduated from Middlesex School, attended the University of Virginia, and after serving four years in the U.S. Coast Guard, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Boston University. Following this, he received a Master of Education degree from the same institution. He also completed graduate work at Harvard University and Wesleyan Universities, as well as Bard College.

During the summer months while he was teaching in Wellesley, Massachusetts, Ned led bicycle trips to England, Europe, Greece, and Japan for American Youth Hostels. During the winter months, he was a ski instructor part-time at Boston University, Sargent Campe, Thorn Mountain, Mount Whittier, and Wildcat Mountain, all in New Hampshire.

In 1967, Ned met his “wife to be”, Terry Ann, who was a Doctoral student at BU, at a Smith College cocktail party in Cambridge. After the couple was married, they lived in Cambridge, spending almost every weekend skiing at their Sugarloaf A-frame.

In 1968, they moved to Camden, where Ned became the head of the English department at Camden-Rockport High School. In the ensuing years, they both spent each year teaching and then in the summer, they would embark on their innumerable travels which took them to practically every European country, even included going behind the Iron Curtain, the Soviet Union and East Berlin.

In addition to sailing to many Caribbean Islands, they also had a bareboat charter company on the River Thames in England which became well-known as “Springtime on the Thames”.

Following retirement from teaching, Ned as a life-long sailor, went to England to augment his American license to become a certified yacht charter skipper in the Caribbean, while his wife Terry was getting an advanced degree at Cambridge. He enjoyed working in this career for fifteen years skippering charges both in the Caribbean and off the Coast of Maine.

Ned also taught seamanship and navigation courses for the Midcoast Sail & Power Squadron, and sailing for the Atlantic Challenge Foundation. He conducted Tai Chi and Qigong classes, for both the SAD #28 Adult Ed program, and the Islesboro Adult Ed program.

Ned was a member of the Society of Colonial Wars, the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants, the Governor William Bradford Compact, and the Royal Yachting Association.

In addition, he was an honorary life member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, a past member of the Tuckerman Ravine volunteer ski patrol, a staff member of the Second Annual Mountain Leadership workshop, a past president of the Hochflieger Ski Club, and a volunteer steward of the Coastal Mountains Land Trust.

He was a member of the Academy of American Poets, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and a past member of the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts.

His grandfather, Charles Collens, was an Ecclesiastical architect who designed many churches and college buildings in the US, including the Riverside Church, The Cloisters, and the Union Theological Seminary, NYC, as well as the chapels at Middlebury and Williams Colleges and libraries at Vassar, Mt. Holyoke, and Columbia universities. 

Ned is survived by his loving wife, Terry Ann of Camden; one son, Jamie and his wife, Heather, their daughter, Ainsley, and sons Ramsey, Liam, and Jameson of Sarasota, Florida.
