BELFAST — Cornerspring Montessori School is hosting an information night for families interested in a Montessori middle school program, Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 5 p.m. Cornerspring’s middle school serves students ages 12 to 14, in a personalized setting, with a strong connection to nature and the community, according to Cornerspring, in a news release. 

Families interested in Cornerspring’s middle school program can find out more about Montessori middle schools, speak with the teaching staff, learn about the rigorous multi-disciplinary curriculum, tour the building, and ask questions. 

Montessori education was developed by an Italian physician and educator, Maria Montessori. It emphasizes independence, freedom within limits, and respects a child’s natural psychological, social, and physical development. Students choose learning activities in mixed-age classrooms where older classmates mentor younger children. Teachers work collaboratively on student projects that can blend math, science, reading, writing, foreign language, and the arts. 

“Adolescents go through a period of intense change and growth. They value completing work with a purpose, belonging to an enriching community, and working with respected mentors,” said Susan Therio, Cornerspring Middle School teacher. “The Cornerspring middle school program is designed to build a strong educational foundation for high school and college.” 

Cornerspring was founded in 2001 and moved into its current high-efficiency, solar-powered building in 2017. The middle school building was also built to the Passiv House-standard for energy efficiency and welcomed students in the fall of 2021.
