God’s heart has a voice. While His voice may not always be audible, those with gentle hearts will hear His heartbeat speaking to them. Consider the prophet Elijah, who was hiding from Jezebel in a cave on Mount Horeb. As the Lord passed by, a gale-force wind broke off pieces of rock from the mountain. Then came a mighty earthquake, followed by a fire. But the Lord was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire (See 1 Kings 19:11-13).
Elijah heard the Lord speaking to him as “A still small voice.” It was then that Elijah had the courage to come out of hiding and stand at the cave’s entrance. How did Elijah hear this “still small voice”? I believe it was in his heart. Elijah was not moved by God’s power but responded from a place of trust, a relationship with God that comes from knowing His voice.
When we are born again of the Spirit, our spirit is awakened by His Spirit. This enables us to hear His voice. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. In the Garden of Eden, Adam heard God’s voice walking in the Garden (Genesis 3:8). Today, His voice walks in us, for we are the garden of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 6:16 states: “As God has said, I will dwell in them and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
God is a God of communication. By learning to be still, I hear His voice speaking to my thoughts, my heart, my spirit, and my emotions. As I read the Scriptures, they come alive. As God has said in Jeremiah 24:7, He has given us a new heart so we may KNOW Him. God desires that we understand when He is speaking, so we may know His heart. When you know His heart, you can become His voice that reveals His heart to others.
The Apostle Paul prayed for the Church to receive the Spirit of wisdom and Revelation, that the eyes of our heart may be enlightened in the knowledge of Him, that we may “KNOW” His passion, His purpose, His glory, and His power (Ephesians 1:17-19). When our heart meshes (unified) with His, we will have the same voice conveyed to others – His.
God speaks in many ways. King David heard the Creator’s voice when he declared in Psalms 19:1-3, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows His handiwork. (2) Day after day, they utter their speech, and night after night, they reveal His knowledge. (3) There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.”
A beautiful sunrise speaks of God’s creative tapestry. The sunlight dancing on the water like sparkles speaks of His creative diversity. Someone who has just received Jesus Christ or experienced healing speaks of God’s mercy and grace. All this and infinitely more speak to us as a voice of love – the expression of God’s heart. His heart and love are the gift of heaven.
You are called to a living, heart-to-heart relationship with your heavenly Father. There is nothing like your Father whispering His love, acceptance, and pleasure for you. God is not a religion: He seeks your fellowship for a Kingdom relationship.
