C. Sue B. Look, obituary
ROCKLAND — C. Sue B. Look passed quietly away July 5, 2025, at the age of 93 ½. She was born in December 1931 to Lawrence ‘Bud’ and Mildred A. White Brother, both from Indiana. Sue was named Carolyn Sue, but family friend Cash thought Carolyn was too big a name for a bitty baby, so she became “Sue” forever more. Cash also gave Baby Sue her first doll, and a life-long passion for dolls began.
Sue grew up in Ft. Thomas, Kentucky, living in three neighboring houses on Vernon Street. When her folks bought a home on Riverside Pkwy, Sue lamented that they wouldn’t live in that fourth house, next door on Vernon Street.
Sue was a lifelong musician, starting with grade school piano lessons from her mom, moving on to flute and piccolo in 7th grade. Six years of marching and concert bands ensued. In middle years, Sue played with Lincoln County Orchestra, performing with retired symphony musicians. Sue also sang, with Hal and us kids, and in church choirs. Finally, in her senior years, she took up bells, playing at church and concerts, right up until her final months. She passed her love of music along to her children, two of which also played flute.
Honor Student, wordsmith, crossword puzzler, a Most Avid Reader, Sue continued to use her skills and wit to keep all her family and friends’ special days noted with cards, poems, jingles she wrote, and unique gifts. And let’s not forget her love of puns! Queen of Greeting Cards, indeed! In fact, one of her favorite jobs was at Hallmark Stores here in Rockland. Sue loved card and board games! (Sequence, anyone?) Sue was an avid Jeopardy fan, training us all to watch it, too, and to NEVER call during its air time.
Backtrack to Sue Brother for a bit. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University, studying elementary education. (It came in handy later, with four children.) Sue happened to "fill in" one Date Night at school, and met Harold "Hal" Look, Jr, also filling in. As Sue put it: We had no expectations, so we were "just ourselves," talking and laughing that whole evening. "Suzie" and Hal never "Look-ed" back, for the next 62+ years. Hal was in the air Force for two years after college, so the newlyweds traveled a bit, with stints in OH, CA, TX, before returning to Hal’s home town, Rockland, for the rest of their time together.
Sue was in Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity, Order of the Diamond, for 75 years. Once in Rockland, she was in two philanthropic organizations: Beta Sigma Phi and PEO. Both groups were a huge part of her life, creating life- long “sisters.” The wonderful events these service organizations shared were part of our entire family’s childhood! (Remember the Daffodil sales and the fashion shows, anyone?) Sue served officer positions and put on “programs” with both groups. We all loved her participations!
Sue was a quiet, steady, privately silly, mother, friend, employee. Her first two jobs were in Cincinnati, clipping coupons (which became a permanent habit) for Proctor/Gamble, and wrapping Christmas packages at Shillito’s. After that, here in Knox County, she often had overlapping jobs, at gift stores, clothing and toy stores, Courier Gazette, House of Cards from 1964 to 2008, US Census enumerator three times, and then Maine Lighthouse Museum (loved this job as much as the card store!) up until the morning of her diagnosis with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Sue was a strong, kind woman, always ready to help.
Sue and Hal ran a successful seafood business for years. They also participated in local theatre groups, with Sue starring in Portrait of Deborah, and both of them holding starring roles in other plays. They were both Seconds in Peyton Place, as well.
Sue was predeceased by her husband, Hal, in 2013; and her second daughter, Deborah ‘Debbie’ in 2008.
She is survived by her eldest daughter, Christie Look and her wife Brenda; son Dan Look and his partner Cathie, and Dan’s two daughters, Jackie Arsenault and Samantha Provencal and her spouse Devin; daughter Terrie Look and her two children, Nathan Look LaGue and Acadia Look LaGue-Celley and her spouse Camden; four great-grandchildren; her sister, Francie Snider and her spouse Ronnie; as well as niece and nephew, Lydia Snider, Joe Snider and his spouse Courtney; and one great-nephew.
Sue would want you all to know how much she enjoyed your friendship, love and Sisterhood. Sue and her family also thank her Cancer Care team, Hospice, and Sussman House for such caring care.
Sue Look’s Memorial will be held Friday, July 18, 2025, at 11 a.m., at Rockland Congregational Church, 180 Limerock St, Rockland. Reception to follow, on premises. In celebration of Sue, please consider wearing something blue, her favorite color – she’d like that!
