BELGRADE — The sale of a Boy Scout camp in Belgrade has been finalized. Camp Bomazeen is now owned by 7 Lakes Alliance, a nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to protecting the lands, lakes, and natural resources of the Belgrade Lakes region.
Completed on October 21, 2026, the transaction marks a new chapter for a property that has connected generations of young people with the outdoors, according to a joint statement by the Pine Tree Council and 7 Lakes Alliance.
"Through this conservation effort, Camp Bomazeen’s significant natural resources will be protected, while opportunities for Scouts to continue camping and enjoying outdoor experiences at the camp will be preserved," said the news release.
For generations, Camp Bomazeen has been a place where young people have developed leadership skills, built friendships, learned outdoor skills, and created lasting memories. Now, its forests, wetlands, shoreline, and bog will be conserved alongside its enduring connection to Scouting.
Camp Bomazeen encompasses approximately 280 acres on Great Pond, including extensive wetlands, forested uplands, shoreline, an esker, and an expansive bog. These features provide important wildlife habitat and help protect water quality in Great Pond, the release said. The property’s wetlands naturally filter runoff, making conservation of the land an important investment in the long-term health of the lake and the broader Belgrade Lakes watershed.
“This achievement was made possible by an extraordinary outpouring of community support, and we are deeply grateful to everyone who believed in this vision,” said Carol Rosa Sabia, Acting President and Chief Executive Officer of 7 Lakes Alliance. “This project is a powerful reminder of what is possible when a community comes together around a place it loves.”
Under the ownership of 7 Lakes Alliance, the organization will steward Camp Bomazeen as a conservation area that balances protection of its natural resources with thoughtful public access, outdoor recreation, and environmental education. The organization envisions Camp Bomazeen as a destination for outdoor experiences and environmental learning for young people, including opportunities for local Scouts and other community groups. 7 Lakes Alliance will work with community members and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive management plan for the property, identifying conservation priorities and opportunities for appropriate future uses.
The organizations have reached an agreement providing for continued Scouting use of the property. Pine Tree Council has also reached an agreement with the Bomazeen Old Timers, a group of longtime volunteers and supporters who have played an important role in maintaining the camp and preserving its Scouting heritage.
“This agreement represents a positive outcome for everyone involved,” said Gary Savignano, Scout Executive and CEO of Pine Tree Council. “Our priorities throughout this process were to protect the property, preserve opportunities for Scouts to continue using Camp Bomazeen, and ensure that the proceeds from the sale would provide lasting support for Scouting in Central Maine. Working with 7 Lakes Alliance, we have accomplished those objectives.”
The agreement reflects a shared commitment to preserving Camp Bomazeen’s history while creating a sustainable future for the property and the young people it will continue to serve.
7 Lakes Alliance expressed their deep appreciation for the overwhelming community support that made this conservation project possible in record time.
