Belfast appoints new police chief

BELFAST — The Belfast City Council has appointed Bobby Cormier of Tilton, New Hampshire, as the city’s new police chief, making it official May 18 during a swearing-in ceremony in City Hall Council Chambers.
Members of his family were in attendance as well as the members of the Council, Belfast Police Department officers and staff, department heads, and law enforcement members from communities around the State of Maine.
“Belfast is such a beautiful city,” said Chief Cormier. “I can’t wait to be a part of this incredible community.”
The City of Belfast encourages the public, “to say hello to Bobby and give him a warm, Belfast-welcome into our home,” and said in a news release that the city and the Belfast Hiring Committee,” are confident that Chief Bobby Cormier will be a great fit into the community and bring exceptional leadership into the Belfast Police Department.”
According to the city, the Police Chief has the integral role of leadership in the delivery of policing services, maintaining the integrity of police staff and sustaining community integration into the selfless work that the department performs.
“The City of Belfast takes the safety of its citizens very seriously. One of the most important components of maintaining excellent public safety in the community is ensuring that the City is equipped with an exceptional Police Chief and officer team to make sure that our citizens have the emergency services that they need, delivered with compassion, efficiency, and professionalism,” the release said. “The City of Belfast is blessed to have such a respectable and well trained police force to address the needs of the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
The Belfast Police Chief Hiring Committee included Interim Belfast Police Chief Dean Jackson, Belfast Fire Chief Patrick Richards, Searsport Chief of Police Todd Boisvert, Belfast City Councilor Mary Mortier, Belfast City Councilor Michael Hurley, Belfast Patrol Sergeant Daniel Thompson, and Belfast City Manager Erin Herbig.
