Backpacks for Reentry Initiative supports reintegration for individuals leaving incarceration
For many individuals leaving incarceration in Knox and Waldo counties, the road to reintegration begins with little more than a plastic trash bag to carry their belongings, according to a news release. The transition back into society presents immense challenges, from securing basic necessities to rebuilding community connections.
Backpacks for Reentry, a collaborative initiative led by Penobscot Bay YMCA staff and Penobscot Bay Community Health Partnerships (PBCHP), is working to change that reality. The program provides individuals exiting Maine Department of Corrections facilities with backpacks filled with essential items to support their successful return to the community.
Each backpack contains critical supplies such as hygiene products, clothing, and food, as well as harm reduction tools like Narcan and information on local recovery and prevention resources. More than just a bag, these backpacks serve as a lifeline—addressing immediate needs while offering support systems that help reduce recidivism and promote long-term stability.
“The mission of this program is to equip individuals with tools for a fresh start as they rebuild their lives and reconnect with their communities—because when they succeed, it makes our community stronger,” said Jamie Lovley, Director of Penobscot Bay YMCA’s Community Health Promotion Department.
How the Community Can Help
Community support is essential to the success of Backpacks for Reentry. Donations directly impact individuals transitioning from incarceration:
-
Sponsor a backpack: a $20 donation provides a fully stocked backpack with essential supplies and recovery resources.
-
Donate a new backpack: a new backpack helps expand the program’s reach—each donated bag is filled and distributed to someone in need.
To contribute, visit: https://www.penbayymca.org/give and select the campaign “Backpacks for Reentry,” or bring new backpacks to the Penobscot Bay YMCA.
Every contribution—whether financial or in-kind—plays a vital role in breaking cycles of incarceration and building safer, stronger communities across Midcoast Maine.
Penobscot Bay Community Health Partnerships (PBCHP), the community health promotion branch of the Penobscot Bay YMCA, serves Knox and Waldo counties to support healthier living in Maine. PBCHP focuses on substance use prevention, harm reduction, tobacco/nicotine prevention, and nutrition education.
