'Art Meets Science: The Coral Reef Project' presentation at Rockland library
Event Date
Thursday, April 02, 2026 - 02:00 pmLocal fiber artist Jill Schoof will be at the Rockland Public Library, Thursday, April 2, at 2 p.m., to discuss the Coral Reef Project, a unique fiber art installation that exists at the intersection of art, science, mathematics, and community and which brings important attention to a grave topic.
Using a crochet technique invented by mathematician Daina Taimiņa, Schoof re-creates the creatures of the coral reefs.
"These models celebrate the remarkable beauty of the reefs, explore the science and mathematics of corals, and highlight the environmental crises of global warming and ocean pollution," said a Library news release.
"Knitted and crocheted corals have been exhibited at major museums throughout the world, and Jill led the effort to launch an exhibit here in Rockland by residents of the Bartlett Woods Retirement Community in 2025," said the release.
Schoof, a retired engineering professor from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, "has turned to fiber arts and to the fascinating intersection of mathematics, science, and art," said the news release.
