Goodreads Listopia can be a great way to help readers discover your book—but only if you play by the rules. First, remember that Listopia is designed for readers, not authors. You shouldn't create lists solely to promote your own book or spam lists with titles that don't fit the theme. Instead, look for existing, relevant lists where your book genuinely belongs. Two major rules to keep in mind:

  1. Authors shouldn't add their own books to Listopia lists. The lists are intended to be curated by readers, not by the authors they're featuring.
  2. Has someone emailed you that he or she can get your book listed for a fee? Paying someone to add or vote for your book is widely viewed as a violation of Goodreads etiquette and could possibly get your book banned for bad practices.

So how do you get your book there?< The answer is: organically. If a reader loves your book and notices it fits a Listopia category—such as "Books Set in Maine"—he or she can add it to that list. Once it's there, other readers who have genuinely enjoyed your book can vote for it. Include a Goodreads link in your newsletter, interact authentically with readers, and encourage honest reviews—not votes. As more people discover and enjoy your book, there's a good chance a reader will eventually add it to the Listopia lists where it belongs.
