‘Strange’ object makes its way to Islesboro shore, prompts law enforcement response
ISLESBORO — The discovery late Monday morning of an unidentified and unusual-looking item on the shore of Islesboro, in the vicinity of a residence on West Bay Road, prompted a response by two State Police Bomb Squad technicians, a Fire Marshal’s investigator and a Marine Patrol officer.
Islesboro Public Safety Director Fred Porter was called out to the residence on West Bay Road at 10:01 a.m. The caller reported seeing a shiny item floating in the water off his beach, and when Porter arrived, he discovered “a strange item” on the shore.
In an email Monday night, Porter said he sent photos of the item to a dispatcher at Waldo County Regional Communications Center, who in turn forwarded the photos to Maine State Police.
“At that point, because of the item’s suspicious appearance, troopers decided to send individuals from the other agencies to the island to inspect the item,” said Porter.
Once on the island, Porter said the troopers inspected the item, and made the decision it was most likely safe, and as a precaution, destroyed it.
