Camden Snow Bowl middle school ski race team grabs first in opening meet

KENTS HILL — The Camden Snow Bowl Middle School racing team won the Marlee Johnston Memorial Slalom race Saturday, Jan. 3 at Kents Hill, competing against athletes from Maranacook, Spruce Mountain, Sugarloaf area, Auburn Oxford Hills, Mount View and Kents Hill.
For the boys’ team, seventh grader, Michael Frampton skied to first place with the two fastest runs of the day, beating the closest competitor by a full two seconds. The team took first place ahead of Maranacook and Oxford Hills.
On the girls’ team, Jessi Mann crushed the field helping her team to capture third place overall, just behind Maranacook and Spruce Mountain.
Because of the Midcoast’s lack of snow, the team has trained at both Sugarloaf and Kent’s Hill, in preparation for what promises to be a great season of defending its state crown.
The team is coached by Weber Roberts and Mike Bridges and includes skiers from area middle schools.
Snow at Saturday’s race was fast and hard and 100% man-made. In addition, the temperatures hovered in the single digits, but Camden prevailed.
“Michael Frampton was relaxed and comfortable in the course and this result showed it today,” said his coach.
The rest of the boys team also had impressive results. Cedar Andrus took fifth, Caellen Roberts sixth and Ethan Andrus fourteenth to round out the scoring.
Team score includes the place number of the top four competitors. Camden won with 26, Maranacook second with 29, followed by third place Oxford Hills with a 42. The Camden Snow Bowl girls team took third place with 53, behind very strong teams Spruce Mountain with 30, and Maranacook with 29.
The combined times for two runs and the place numbers for the girls included Mann 1:06.10 (2nd); Isabelle Manahan 1:15.76 (12th); Nadie King 1:16.38 (14th); Annika Charland 1:23.11 (25th); Annabelle Williams 1:26.54 (28th).
The combined times for two runs and the place numbers for the boys included Frampton 1:00.15 (1st); Andrus 1:03.79 (5th); Roberts 1:04.25 (6th); Andrus 1:11.86 (14th); Rhys White 1:15.49 (20th); Oscar Horovitz 1:17.97 (23rd); Devon Smith 1:18.17 (24th); Noah Lachance 1:27.00 (31st); Tanner Robinson 1:29.44 (33rd)
Also on Saturday, at its home mountain, the Camden Snow Bowl Racing Program held its first day with 40 racing participants of various ages engaged in dry land training, watching training videos, and working with the program’s excellent coaches.
“It was a huge success with the many awesome coaches spreading pure enthusiasm,” according to Race Program manager, Jen Conover.
The goals of Camden Snow Bowl’s race development and competition programs are to improve skiing and snowboarding ability, provide quality race training and racing experiences, develop a lifelong passion for the sport, and to have fun!
