Richard Ballou Sr., obituary
LINCOLNVILLE BEACH — Richard David Ballou Sr., 78, died Feb. 26, 2014, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Born in Providence, R.I., he was the son of Leroy Clifton and Nancy (Dumican) Ballou. A 1952 graduate of East Providence High School, Dick attended Norwich University in Vermont, where he studied electrical engineering for three years.
He also served in the Rhode Island National Guard for 10 years. In 1953, he married Patricia Ann Healy in Taunton, Mass.
A construction foreman supervisor for New England Telephone Company, Dick oversaw many projects throughout New England in his 30 years there.
In Rhode Island, Dick enjoyed cruising with family and friends on his 46-foot Pacemaker Sport Fisherman in the waters of Narragansett Bay and around Block Island. He looked forward to the annual tuna tournaments held in Point Judith with his co-captains Bill Feeney, Charlie Hall, Jack Sheehan, Ernie Allen and Arthur Ballou.
Dick spent as much time as possible at his hunting and fishing camp in Vermont with his best friends Kent Gooding, Jim Whitehead, Burt Batty, John Rodgers, Ed Durfee, Jay Frazier and Alan Duhamel.
In 1985, Dick and Patricia moved to Lincolnville, where together with their sons built The Black Horse Inn and several family homes. He enjoyed serving on the Route 1 Commission, which planned and was followed by the Lincolnville Beach area revitalization project several years ago.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Patricia Ballou; his sons, Richard D. Ballou Jr., Gary S. Ballou and Scott J. Ballou; his grandchildren, Matthew S. Ballou, Nicole E. Ballou, Stephanie L. Ballou, Jason R. Ballou, Ashley Ballou, Colby Ballou and Molly B. Ballou; his great-grandchildren, Tucker S. Taylor Ballou, Aiden C. Ballou Grace, Jaxon Ballou and Madison Ballou; his sister, Suzanne Ballout Rodgers; his nephew, David S. Rodgers; his nieces, Kerry Rodgers Elmasian and Nancy Rodgers Palumbo; and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; and his son, Robert S. Ballou.
Services will be held in Rhode Island in the spring.
