Newell M. McLain, obituary
ROCKLAND — Newell M. McLain, 91, died peacefully, following a brief illness, Nov. 21, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.
Born in Thomaston July 31, 1922, he was the son of Newell and Josephine Mitchell McLain. He attended local schools.
In May of 1950, Newell married Arlene Fickett, a friend of his sisters’, in Rockland. Together they made their home on Willow Street in Rockland for more than 63 years.
A hard worker his entire life, Mr. McLain began his working career as a young boy, working first in his father's boat shop and later with Snow's Ship Yard during World War II. He retired from Wayfarer Marine in Camden in 1989.
Mr. McLain enjoyed cooking, learning everything he knew from his wife. He would read her the recipe, and she would instruct him. Under her tutelage he became well-known for his biscuits and apple pies.
Predeceased by his son, Newell Colby McLain; three brothers, John, Alpheus and George McLain; two sisters, Mary Massie and Helen Hooper; and a nephew, Kendall McLain; Mr. McLain is survived by his wife, Arlene McLain of Rockland; and many nieces and nephews and several cousins.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. at Village Cemetery in Thomaston. The Rev. Linda Campbell-Marshall will officiate.
