Gladys Eastman, obituary
ROCKLAND — Gladys R. Eastman, 87, died peacefully Oct. 2, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center, following a period of declining health.
Born June 25, 1926, in Bliss, N.Y., she was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters born to George and Clara Sanford Webster. Educated in western New York, Gladys graduated high school there.
Moving to Maine in 1945, she worked for several years at Holmes Packing Company. Gladys later was employed ad Van Baalens, working her way up to supervisor and retiring after 30 years.
In 1972 Gladys married Paul Eastman in Rockland, where they made their home and for many years, Mr. Eastman operated Eastman's Barber Shop on Main Street. Before Mr. Eastman retired in 2007, Gladys spent many hours assisting him at the shop with daily duties.
Gladys loved dancing, listening to her husband in his barber shop quartet, going to the Elks Club and playing cards. One of her favorite pastimes was picking dandelions, keeping track of how many she picked each year.
Gladys also loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by her husband in 2008, Gladys is survived by her son, Donald Nelson and his wife, Laura, of Montrose, Pa,; her step-children, Martin Eastman and his wife, Robin, of Suffield, Conn., Leslie Eastman and Gary Eastman, both of Norwich, Conn., and Patricia Suraci and her husband, Richard, of Hamden, Conn.; her grandchildren, Douglas Nelson and his wife, Victoria, Adam Nelson and his wife, Jordan, and Daniel Nelson; her step-grandchildren, Gretchen, Samuel, Katherine Eastman, Timothy, Emily and Amy Suraci; her great-grandchildren, Jade Nelson, Dante Nelson, Domenic Vonaa and Oren Nelson; her step great-grandson, Domenic Vonaa; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland.
