Police busy in Waldo County over July 4 holiday, weekend
It was a busy holiday weekend for Waldo County, and while much of the police activity consisted of the usual speeding tickets and other non-moving violations, there were some notable exceptions to the police log.
July 3
Waldo County emergency dispatchers received a report of a helicopter crash in Burnham. The helicopter, a Schweizer 300C, was canvassing the area in search of a local black bear population when the 58-year-old pilot, from Bowdoinham, began experiencing technical problems that eventually resulted in the aircraft crashing in a heavily wooded area approximately 1/4-mile from Winnecook Road. The only other occupant, a 27 year-old student from Unity College, was able to travel through the woods to the road for help. The Burnham Fire Department, Clinton Fire Department and Rescue and Unity Ambulance all responded to the scene, where both occupants were transported to local hospitals with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration was notified of the crash and is investigating.
July 4
Robert E. Wing, 44, of Belfast, was summonsed for reckless conduct, use of fireworks and disorderly conduct.
Matthew E. Aranjo, 36, of Boston, Mass., was summonsed for theft at the Belfast Reny's June 28. Aranjo was identified with the help of the public after the Belfast Police Department posted stills from a surveillance video on their Facebook page.
John Penney, 25, of Knox, was arrested for aggravated assault. Penney was also summonsed for criminal mischief and assault.
July 5
Jerome Reynolds, 62, of Brooks, was arrested for criminal mischief, terrorizing, arson, assault and refusing to submit to arrest or detention. Waldo County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Jeff Trafton said that when Reynolds' wife originally called Waldo County Dispatch, she reported that they'd had a dispute and she wanted him removed from the home. Although at that point Reynolds had yet to break any laws, Trafton said that by the time deputies arrived they discovered he had dumped motor oil on her car and attempted to light it on fire. Trafton was unsure how much damage the vehicle actually sustained, but Reynold's action resulted in the arson charge and the subsequent confrontation between deputies and Reynolds resulted in the other charges.
June 7
A 34-year-old woman from Northport was involved in a single-vehicle accident in the morning on Route 52 in Belfast. The operator reported tapping the breaks as she turned to talk to her 9-year-old son. Belfast Police Detective Bryan Cunningham said the operator stated she didn't remember anything after turning to talk to her son, only exiting the roadway and striking a telephone pole. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.
June 8
Little River Redemption in Belfast was burglarized sometime over the holiday weekend. The redemption center closed at 4 p.m. Saturday and Belfast Police discovered the front door had been broken in Monday morning, July 8. Police said approximately 50 large clear bags of pre-sorted bottles and cans were stolen, a haul worth an estimated $2,500. Cunningham said they were unsure how the thieves were able to take such a large quantity unnoticed, saying that they would have either had to have had multiple vehicles or made multiple trips to cart away the extremely large bags.
