Near head-on crash in Rockport sends two to hospital

ROCKPORT — A U.S. Postal Service delivery truck and a Volvo station wagon experienced a near head-on crash, that also involved a third vehicle, around 10:30 a.m., Wednesday morning on Route 1 in Rockport. As a result of the crash, the small van landed on its side in a ditch and required firefighters to extricate the driver.
Rockport Police Department, Rockport Fire Department, Northeast Ambulance and Rockland EMS responded to the area of 760 Commercial Street, where they found that one of the vehicles apparently crossed the center line, according to Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley, resulting in the near head-on, and causing the mail truck to roll over.
The USPS driver had minor back pain, and was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by North East Mobile Health Services, said Peasley.
“He was pinned in and we had to cut the windshield to get him out,” said Peasley.
According to the Rockport Police Department, a white 1990 GM United Stated Postal Carrier van, operated by Stephen Farnum, 73 of Waldoboro, was travelling North on Commercial Street when it allegedly struck a grey 2003 Volvo, operated by William Petrini, 88 of Camden, that was travelling South on Commercial Street.
The Postal van then rolled on its side, while the Volvo stopped a short distance down the road.
A third vehicle, a blue 2012 Ford SUV, operated by Leanna Spear, 39 of Rockport, was damaged by debris from the initial collision of the two initial vehicles.
The Volvo driver was able to get himself into the passenger seat after the crash, and the airbag deployed. He was transported to Pen Bay by Rockland Fire and EMS.
Farnum was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center by Northeast Ambulance and Petrini was transported to Pen Bay Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
The van and the Volvo were removed from the scene by Camden Exxon.
The crash is under investigation by Officer Travis Ford of Rockport PD.
