UNION — Arnold A. Allen Jr., 70, passed away Sunday, October 10, 2021, at home with his family by his side. He fought a yearlong battle with leukemia.

Born in Rockland, he was the son of Arnold A. and Dorothy Tripp Allen. He attended Rockland schools.

As a teenager he worked lobstering and helped his dad build a boat. At age 18 he began working with Russell Fish, who became a lifelong friend.

While attending dances at Rockland Rec Center he met Louise Beote. They were married on May 20, 1972, and soon after moved to Union where they made their home and raised their two children.

Arnold continued working with Russell Fish until December 1991, when he began employment with Prock Marine Company, where he worked the next 28 years, retiring December 31, 2019.

Arnold was an avid outdoors man. He grew up hunting, fishing and camping with his dad, all of which he enjoyed doing with his children, nephew Jamie and grandchildren. The month of November always brought a crowd to the house for hunting, coffee, donuts, and lots of stories. In 2020 he won a moose tag, at which time he and his son shared a memorable hunting trip and tagged out with a bull. Family camping trips were always a great adventure, from trips to the remote Maine woods and riding the golden road looking for wildlife, to local campgrounds. There were always lots of laughs at the campfire and tons of bass fishing. We would hold our own family fishing competition and Arnold always managed to out fish us all. Arnold was a great handyman and enjoyed working around his home. He was always willing to lend a hand to family or a friend. For many years he could be found with the “boys” at McDonalds having coffee.

Other than his parents, Arnold was predeceased by three brothers, James Allen, Donald Mansfield and Richard Mansfield.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Louise; his daughter Susan L. Martz and her husband Edwin all of Union; his son David A. Allen and fiancée Rachel Lynn Hendrick of Thomaston; his siblings, Edward Allen and his wife Julie of Union, Donna Emery of Rockland, Shirley Quigley and her husband Stephen of Holiday, Florida, Diane Allen of Union, Kathy Bassard and her husband Bill of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Anna Martz, Dylan Martz, Jillian Martz; four great-grandchildren, Joshua, Eastin, Maddox and Ophelia; a special nephew Jamie Spaulding of Vassalboro whom he considered as a son; many nieces and nephews, as well as extended family members and close friends.

An informal Celebration of Arnolds Life will be held Friday, October 15, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m., at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at LLS New England, P.O. Box 22471, New York, NY 10087, or Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County, P.O. Box 1294, Rockland, ME 04841.
