BRUNSWICK — Patricia Irene Felton, 77, passed away peacefully at Avita of Brunswick on Sept. 25, 2021.

The eldest of six children of John W. and Ruth Nickerson Felton, Pat was born on March 17, 1944, in Camden. Her early years were in Camden until the family moved to East Hartford, Connecticut in 1951. Pat graduated from East Hartford High School and attended the University of Connecticut.

Always the adventurer and independent person, as a young woman she traveled alone staying in hostels in Europe one summer, then traveled to the other side of the world to Micronesia; and spent a week rafting down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. In 1971, Pat and her youngest sister, Janet, spent three weeks traveling across the US. Pat also created her own adventures closer to home when she bought a small cabin near Craftsbury, Vermont and spent many weekends working on her tiny retreat in the woods.

Pat held various positions in the insurance industry in Connecticut and then moved back to Maine where she built her own house in Limerick. She became Manager of Purchasing at Blue Cross Blue Shield Maine until she was disabled with a brain injury as the result of a traffic accident in 1987.

While Pat was no longer able to have a traditional job after the accident, it did not slow her down from accomplishing many other goals including editing a book published in 1992, Through This Window: Views on Traumatic Brain Injury; becoming certified as a Master Gardener in 2002 and being active in community affairs in the various towns she chose to live in – Eustis, Brooks, Ellsworth, and Belfast.

She was recognized for her contributions over the years, including receiving an Outstanding Service Award in 1976 for the time and energy she put into establishing and running the Hartford Office of The Connecticut Chapter of the Sierra Club; receiving a Certificate of Recognition from the New England Rehabilitation Hospital with deep appreciation and honor of dedicated and faithful service in 1990; the 2009 Smart Growth Award for upholding the Principles of Smart Growth presented by Friends of Midcoast Maine; and a Certificate of Appreciation for continued volunteer time in 2012 of 75 or more hours for the Knox-Lincoln & Waldo counties Master Gardener Program presented in April 2013.

Pat was also active at times with Literacy Volunteers, and Habitat for Humanity. She enjoyed writing various feature articles and letters to the editor in her local community newspapers.

In her last couple of years, Pat lived with long time close friends Carol Bondy and Alice Carroll in Brunswick before moving into assisted living facilities at The McLellan and then Avita, Brunswick.

Pat was predeceased by her parents and is survived by her siblings and their spouses and extended families: Andrea Felton Perko and Michael Perko, Colchester, Connecticut; John L. and Jacqueline Felton, Kokomo, Indiana; Margaret Felton Viens and Kenneth Viens, Waterville, Maine; Marjorie Felton Watson and Stanley Watson, Georgetown, Massachusetts; Janet Felton Weisner and Donald Weisner, Willington, Connecticut.

She was particularly proud of the accomplishments and families of her three nieces (Amy Perko Hand, Sara Watson, and Bridget Weisner) and five nephews (Michael Perko, Nicholas Viens, Daniel Viens, David Watson, Christopher Weisner), and of her seven great-nieces and five great-nephews.

A graveside service will be held Monday, October 4, 2021, at 11 a.m., in Mountain View Cemetery, Camden.
