‘You Belong’ book study group begins May 11

Wed, 04/14/2021 - 12:45pm

On Tuesday, May 11, from 6 - 8 p.m., The Dancing Elephant will launch a 6-week book study group “You Belong" via Zoom, co-facilitated by Rachel Nixon and Cynthia Trone. The class is open to the community by donation.

Participants are invited to order a copy of the class book, You Belong: A Call for Connection by Sebene book study group “You Belong" Selassie. Registration is required to receive Zoom link.

“As we emerge from a year of social distancing, we are faced with the unique opportunity to explore what it means to belong,” said Dancing Elephant, in a news release.

Selassie, a Buddhist teacher, author, and speaker born in Ethiopia and raised in the U.S., states, "Belonging is our capacity to feel joy, freedom, and love in any moment.”

In her book, she invites us to ground, know, and love ourselves as the basis for connection. Selassie introduces us to Buddhist principles – The Two Truths, Liberation, the Five Precepts – and challenges us to explore the ancient concepts within the context of stories and our day-to-day life. Weekly gatherings will include guided meditation, experiential practices, deep listening, and sharing.

Rachel Nixon has been exploring Buddhist teachings since 1999. She has trained at the Insight Meditation Society in MA, as well as at Shambhala Buddhist Centers in the U.S. and Canada. Cynthia Trone earned her Master’s Degree in Mindfulness Studies from Lesley University in 2017. Her work focuses on the connection of ancient wisdom and modern crises.

The Dancing Elephant is a community center for yoga, meditation, and art located in downtown Rockland. All programs are donation-based and available for all levels.
