BELFAST — Belfast’s Colonial Theatre is celebrating the holidays with one of the Belfast area’s favorite activity:  the 25tth Annual Free Family Holiday Matinee Film Series.  Starting the weekend of Thanksgiving and right up until just before Christmas the Colonial Theatre in downtown Belfast will be hosting free movies for the whole family every Saturday and Sunday.

This holiday tradition of free movies for the whole family is made possible by the generous support of local groups and businesses. Without the underwriters there could be no free shows. With two shows on Saturday and Sunday at 12:30 and 3 p.m.,  there are 850 free seats each weekend waiting for children of all ages from 1 to 100. That’s 3,400 free seats.

This event, started 25 years ago, and now sees many parents bringing children who first came to the free matinees when they were children. Sometimes people ask; “Do I have to accompany a child to get in?”  No!

Everyone is welcome. The movies are geared towards children but everyone is welcome with or without kids.

To make room for everyone The Colonial Theatre will show the 12:30 p.m. movie on two screens and have 275 seats available. At the 3 p.m. show the theatre has 150 seats so come to the early show and be sure of a seat at this very popular holiday event.

Why do people love this film series? Number one is it’s free.

But most importantly it keeps people around Belfast and they do their shopping and visiting here rather than heading out of town. Join hundreds of kids and adults as they enjoy free movies made possible by local area businesses and groups. Join your friends and neighbors for a fun holiday tradidtion. All are welcome.

Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 Dora the Explorer and the Lost City of Gold: live action Dora heads into her most dangerous adventure: high school. December 7 and 8  The Angry Birds Movie 2  Animated comedy. The flightless but really angry birds and the scheming green piggies take their beef to the next level in The Angry Birds Movie 2! When a new threat emerges that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger they must team up to forge an unsteady truce and form an unlikely superteam to save their homes. PG

December 14 and 15 Abominable.  Animated Comedy. When a teen encounters a young Yeti on the roof of her apartment building in Shanghai, she and her mischievous friends name him "Everest" and embark on an epic quest to reunite the magical creature with his family at the highest point on Earth. But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Yeti hunters to help Everest get home. PG

December 21 and 22. The Addams Family. With eye popping animation get ready to snap your fingers! The first family of haunted houses, the Addams Family, is back on the big screen in the first animated comedy about the kookiest family on the block. Funny, outlandish, and completely iconic, the Addams Family redefines what it means to be a good neighbor. PG
