Works by artist Lesia Sochor on display at Local Color Gallery
Local Color Gallery welcomes guest artist Lesia Sochor, whose work will be displayed from September 23 through November 16. The Gallery invites everyone to an opening reception on Friday, September 26, as part of Belfast’s Fourth Friday Art Walk, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Sochor will give an artist talk at 5:30 p.m.
Lesia Sochor's most recent series is titled “Thimble.” A quiet, unassuming object, rich in history, a thimble is worn over the fingertip to prevent injury while sewing. Sochor views the thimble as a metaphor for protection, utilizing both the wearer's hand and manual gestures in drawings and sculptures to communicate strength and constancy. The thimble may be seen as an intervention to protect the fractured parts of ourselves, our families, and our ruptured world. Sochor’s hope is for humanity to fill all the thimbles in existence with respect, love, and peace.
Lesia Sochor has been a part of the artistic fiber of Waldo County since she co-founded “Artfellows,” the first cooperative gallery in Belfast, in 1980. She is a devotee of this community, where the arts continue to thrive. A graduate of Philadelphia College of Art, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits in museums, universities, libraries and galleries. Recent exhibit venues include the Danforth Art Museum, the Michael Klahr Center at UMA, the Zillman Museum, the Belfast Library, and the Littlefield, Parsonage, and Cove Street galleries.
Local Color Gallery is located at 135 High Street in Belfast. Current hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 to 5, and Sunday 11 to 4. For more information see localcolorgallerymaine.org or call 207-218-1249.
