Why I am seeking a seat on Camden-Rockport and Five Town CSD school boards
My young family and I moved to Camden specifically for the school system. We truly value education, community and the natural world. I have a third grader at Camden-Rockport Elementary School and a fifth grader at the Camden-Rockport Middle School. My third grader attended CRES’s first Nature Based Pre-K class (lottery enrollment) and we really did feel like we won the lotto! We feel so lucky to live in Camden and have built a special community in our short time here.
As the daughter of a Cuban refugee, I understand how important it is to protect our public institutions and freedoms. I grew up in Stuart, Florida, attending public schools. Unfortunately, a lot has changed in Florida since my childhood due to the influence of far-right extremists. Now, more than ever, it is important we protect our public schools. This and climate concerns are the reason I wanted to move my family from Florida to Maine.
Since our first years at CRES, I've volunteered on the School Alliance and in the classrooms. I became even more involved when I learned the Spanish program at CRES was being cut. My biggest concern about cutting the program was the elimination of the cultural aspect it provided. As a society, it is imperative that we learn about and discuss all cultures and communities.
In addition to being a proud mom and active community member, I'm a licensed clinical social worker and provide mental health counseling to teenagers and adults. I have an in-depth understanding of what students and our community are experiencing and navigating. Mental health and education are directly correlated. I'll work to protect students' ability to learn in supportive learning environments.
I really love the nature based learning that the schools are incorporating. I'd love to see more emphasis on hands-on approaches to learning. As the daughter of an artist and a boat-builder, I understand that we aren't all cut out for the traditional school day, or even the high school to university route.
I'm excited for the opportunity to serve on our school board and work with the current board, parents, staff and community members. I hope that I can count on your vote in the upcoming election.
