What it takes to prep for the Golden Globe Race, a 30,000-mile, solo, nonstop circumnavigation of earth
Offshore sailor and 2026 Golden Globe racer Matt Woodside talked about preparations for his 30,000-mile, solo, non-stop circumnavigation of earth with the Rockland Yacht Club. In this race, competitors sail using traditional navigation methods — no GPS navigation software, no modern routing, and limited communication with the outside world.
"It is one of the world’s most demanding sailing challenges," said a news release from the RYC.
On June 24, Woodside described what it will take to rund the five great capes without outside assistance. He also spoke about the race requirements, his preparation, the equipment he’ll rely on, and what he expects to face during this extraordinary adventure.
The presentation drew a large crowd of members and guests, who kept Matt busy with thoughtful questions throughout the evening. Afterward, many attendees walked down to the waterfront for a tour of his boat, Tipi Haere, getting a firsthand look at the vessel that will carry him around the world.
The Rockland Yacht Club will be following Matt’s journey throughout the race, which begins September 6 at Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, and provide updates in its Newsletter and on Facebook, tracking his progress, and cheering him on every nautical mile of the way.
