Weekly STEM programming at Transportation Museum's Science and Industry Center
Owls Head Transportation Museum offers a range of weekly educational programs at its Science & Industry Center (S&IC), reinforcing the museum’s role as a community resource for hands-on STEM learning, according to OHTM, in a news release.
"Designed to connect transportation history with science, engineering, and real-world industry concepts, the S&IC provides consistent opportunities for learners across multiple age groups to explore, experiment, and engage," said OHTM.
Weekly programming includes Junior Inventors, Owls Nest, and STEM Saturdays, each designed to serve different age demographics while supporting curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving through interactive STEM activities.
Junior Inventors is an night after-school program designed for youth ages K-8th and their families. The program encourages participants to think like builders, engineers, and innovators through hands-on activities and guided exploration. Junior Inventors supports learning beyond the classroom, helping students develop foundational STEM skills, creative confidence, and problem-solving strategies through making and experimentation. Program runs Thursday evenings from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.
Owls Nest is designed for younger learners ages 2-4 years old and focuses on early exposure to science and industry concepts. Through age-appropriate, interactive experiences, Owls Nest fosters curiosity, discovery, and family engagement, creating an accessible introduction to STEM learning in a welcoming environment. Program runs on Wednesday & Fridays from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. STEM Saturdays are designed for youth and families of all ages. These weekly experiences invite participants to explore science, technology, engineering, and math through hands-on activities connected to the museum’s collections and exhibits.
STEM Saturdays highlight how historical innovation and modern industry intersect, reinforcing real-world applications of STEM skills. Program runs every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
The Science & Industry Center, an 14,000-square-foot addition to Owls Head Transportation Museum, was created to support experiential learning and strengthen connections between education, history, and industry. Through its weekly programming, the center serves as a year-round resource for students, families, and educators, supporting lifelong learning and community engagement.
Access and Membership Benefits
All weekly programs at the Science & Industry Center—including Junior Inventors, Owls Nest, and STEM Saturdays—are included with Owls Head Transportation Museum membership or standard museum admission.
"This ensures that families, students, and community members can engage with hands-on STEM learning without additional cost, reinforcing the museum’s commitment to making educational experiences accessible to all," said OHTM.
