UPDATE (Feb. 1) — Rockport police confirmed that the driver of the vehicle in the rollover crash Jan. 31 was Trevor Taylor, 29, of Holden. He was driving a 2012 tan Chevy Equinox when he went off the side of Commercial Street (Route 1). Taylor told police that he thought he fell asleep while driving, so police have attributed the cause of the crash to driver fatigue. Rockport police officer Chris Taylor confirmed that Taylor was not distracted while driving and the roads were clear. The driver was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and Officer Taylor said that he was “very, very lucky” he was not injured. The vehicle was totaled in the crash.

ROCKPORT — A late afternoon rollover crash on Commercial Street (Route 1) in Rockport Jan. 31 backed up traffic in both directions as firefighters and Camden Exxon worked together in frigid temperatures to remove a vehicle from the woods.

According to Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley, firefighters were notified at 3:47 p.m. that a vehicle was upside down in a ditch off of Commercial Street, possibly in the water. Rockport Fire Lt. David Leighton who was nearby at a work location, was the first to arrive at the scene and confirmed that the car was not upside down or in the water.

Peasley said that the driver went off the side of Route 1 near the entrance of Roxmont Road, while traveling north. The vehicle went through a snowbank and guardrail and then struck a telephone pole. It was airborne before landing on the driver’s side, colliding with a tree.

The driver, a male, climbed out of the vehicle and was uninjured. The front airbag deployed during the crash.

In addition to Rockport firefighters, Rockport Police and North East Ambulance Service also assisted at the scene.

The accident scene was cleared at approximately 4:35 p.m.
