Turkeys stolen from Thomaston farm
THOMASTON – A Thomaston farm was robbed early Tuesday morning, Oct. 27, and turkeys were stolen and others escaped and are missing after a fence was left down during the break-in.
The owner of Grace Pond Farm, Rhiannon Hampson, said on the farm’s Facebook page Oct. 27, that the theft occurred between 1:58 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. and the turkeys were stolen from the upper field. The farm is located at 530 Main Street in Thomaston.
“Not only did they steal turkeys, they left the fence down so the others escaped, and are wandering around terrified in the dark having been disturbed, possibly injured (they're actually fragile). They knocked over feed, wasting that and generally left things a mess,” she said in the Facebook post.
Hampson said a police report will be filed after milking and after the remaining turkeys calmed down and settled back in their house.
There are ways the public can help with identifying the suspect, according to Hampson.
“If someone you know suddenly has several large, white broad breasted turkeys for themselves (or that they're trying to sell you) tell us and the Thomaston Police Dept. ASAP!,” she said.
Hampson also said that if you live near the farm on Route 1 and have a ring camera that faces Route 1, they are looking for footage of any dark color pick up trucks that went north from the farm driveway between 2 a.m. and 2:15 a.m.
“I have a lot of other things to say about this, namely about stealing from a small family farm, and stealing from people who routinely work an 80 - 100 hour week, from people who have donated more than 1000 pounds of meat to local charities this year. For now, I'll stick with the above and just ask for your help in locating the thief,” Hampson said.
According to its website, Grace Pond Farm is a small, diversified, organically certified livestock dairy farm on the ancestral land of the Wawenock People of the Penobscot Tribe.
