Thomaston temporarily closes Mill River Park to dogs
The Town of Thomaston announces a temporary closure of Mill River Park to all dogs beginning May 1, 2026, for a period of one year.
According to the Town, in a news release, the decision follows ongoing water quality concerns in the St. George River. Recent findings from the Maine Department of Marine Resources indicate that microbial contamination levels are approaching regulatory limits, with evidence suggesting pet waste may be contributing to water quality impacts in the area, according to the news release.
"Protecting water quality is critical to safeguarding public health, preserving the local environment, and supporting the region’s shellfish industry, which plays an important role in the local economy," said the Town. "The temporary closure will allow the Town and state officials to continue monitoring conditions and evaluate whether improvements occur in the absence of dog-related contamination."
During the closure period, dogs will not be permitted at Mill River Park, regardless of leash status. The Town will continue enforcement of both the closure and the Dog Waste Ordinance, which carries fines of $50 for a first offense and $100 for subsequent violations on Town-owned property. Additional signage and public education efforts will also be implemented.
Residents looking for alternative recreation opportunities for their pets are encouraged to visit the Thomaston Dog Park, according to the Town.
"The Town appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding as it takes proactive steps to protect the health of the St. George River and the shared natural resources that are vital to the community," said the Town.
The closure will be reevaluated after one year following a review of ongoing water quality testing and monitoring data collected throughout the season.
