Roland Flaherty, obituary

WARREN — Roland D. Flaherty Sr., 80, died July 27, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport, after a brief illness.

Born in Columbia Falls April 7, 1933, he was the son of Lawrence A. and Elizabeth H. Babbage Flaherty. Roland grew up in Milbridge, where he attended local schools.

In 1955, he moved to Rockland and was employed a few years at H.H. Crie Hardware. He later worked at Morse Boat Yard in Thomaston, before beginning a construction company, Flaherty Builders. Eventually Roland was joined in the operation of that business by his brother, Paul M. Flaherty Sr. In the early 1970s, in conjunction with the operation of his business, Roland began working with Prock Marine Company and retired as a carpenter foreman in 1994. He continued working as a carpenter until 2011.

Having been together since 1977, he married Charlotte E. Munro on July 24, 1985, in Warren.

Roland loved hunting, fishing and camping, and for more than 20 years, was a seasonal camper at Alders Shores in Searsmont.

He was a member of the West Rockport Baptist Church, where he enjoyed attending the men's breakfasts.

An accomplished storyteller, Roland would tell a story to anyone willing to listen.

Roland was predeceased by his brother, Paul M. Flaherty Sr. in 2001; and a great-granddaughter, Ari Lynn Peters in March of this year. Besides his wife of 28 years, Charlotte of Warren; he is survived by four sons, Roland D. Flaherty Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Silver Springs, Fla., Daniel F. Flaherty and his companion, Emily, of Lincolnville, Ivan L. Flaherty and his wife, Wendy, of Warren, and Wayne A. Flaherty and his wife, Krystal, of Waldoboro; three daughters and their husbands, Deborah and Douglas Hanson and Loretta and Clifford Hunt, all of Silver Springs, Fla., and Vangie and Henry Dudley Jr. of Waldoboro; two step-children, William Burns and his wife, Cathy, of Florida, and Annette Light and her husband, Gary, of Liberty; three sisters and their husbands, Virginia and John Crabtree, Laura and Harold Grant, and Pearl and Neil Stetson, all of Warren; one brother, John C. Flaherty of Warren; 26 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Aug. 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at West Rockport Baptist Church, 545 Park St. in Rockport; where a funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Warren.
