Peter M. Williams, obituary
SEARSMONT — Peter M. Williams, 66, passed away on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, with his dog and copilot, Kirby, faithfully by his side.
Born on April 2, 1959, in Ellsworth, Maine, Peter was the fourth child of Virginia and Thomas Williams. He grew up surrounded by the joy and chaos of a big family with his five siblings, Tommy, Betsy, David, Kathi and Martha. The family later moved from Ellsworth to Canton, Massachusetts, before eventually settling in Camden, Maine, in 1963.
There, the family lived in Undercliff on outer Bayview Street, where Peter’s boundaries were Beacon Avenue, Chestnut Street, the ocean, and the belted Galloways. It was here that his love of the outdoors blossomed, as he spent countless hours exploring the neighborhood woods. These years gave him many of his most cherished childhood memories and laid the foundation for the person he would become.
As a teenager, Peter worked at the Camden Yacht Club as a launch driver, spending long days shuttling people and boats across the harbor. It was there that he developed his lifelong love of boats and the ocean, a passion that never left him. Up until his passing, you could find Peter happiest aboard his boat, the Serenity Bound, navigating Maine’s coastal waters with Kirby and his partner, Ann, by his side.
Peter attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he earned an associate degree in business management and bachelor’s degree in public administration in 1984. He and his high school sweetheart, Kelly, married in 1987, and together they welcomed two children, Taylor and Haley. Peter often said that being a father was the very best thing he ever did.
After graduation, Peter began his career in insurance adjusting before joining Fred S. James in Portland, Maine, as an account executive. In 1990, after he and Kelly returned to the Midcoast, he continued his career at Allen Insurance and Financial in commercial insurance sales. Over the next 34 years, he established himself as a respected leader in commercial insurance, working with some of Maine and New England’s largest and most complex insurance risks. Known for his expertise, integrity, and genuine care for the people he served, Peter built relationships with clients that often turned into lifelong friendships. When he retired from Allen Insurance and Financial in 2024 as Senior Vice President of Commercial Lines, he left behind a legacy of professionalism, kindness, and shoes not easily filled.
Peter was loved for his boundless energy, unbridled generosity and gregarious spirit. You could feel his energy when he walked into a room. If he believed in a person or a cause, he gave himself fully, offering his time and energy without a second thought. If someone needed a shirt, he would give them the one off his back – if they needed two, he’d gladly go out and buy another. He never hesitated to stop and help a stranger on the side of the road, often leaving with a new friend. Going above and beyond for others was not just something Peter did; it was at the very core of who he was.
That same energy carried into his love of adventure. He relished an adrenaline rush, whether at the helm of his boat, on a snowmobile, or even on horseback – “bigger, better, faster” was simply his way of life. At the same time, he found deep joy in the outdoors, where the quiet of the wilderness balanced his otherwise fast pace. For someone who often lived life at a hundred miles an hour, the stillness and solitude of the wild offered him a rare kind of peace. Surrounded by trees and far from the noise of the world, Peter could take a breath and simply be. He loved fishing and hunting, and he especially cherished trips to the Canadian and Alaskan wilderness with his brother, David, and close friends. Those adventures, filled with laughter, camaraderie, and even a few too-close-for-comfort bear encounters, remained some of his most cherished memories.
Peter met Ann in the fall of 2011, they were instantly connected, and a deep love grew between them. Peter’s endless energy suited Ann’s active lifestyle. They enjoyed grand adventures as well as the everyday routines of being with each other. They found joy in their children’s lives, the outdoors, their dogs, time spent with family and friends, and shared travels. Peter found calm in having Ann as a life partner, and their memories of joy and laughter will remain.
Peter will be forever held in the hearts of his children, Taylor (with spouse Laura) and Haley (with spouse Scott); his partner, Ann Moody, and her children, Emma and Eli Wilson; his siblings David Williams, Martha Flint (with spouse Bill), Betsy Stivers (with spouse John), and Kathi Williams; his nieces and nephews Alice Flint (with spouse Alex), David Flint (with spouse Mair), Caroline Keefe, Mo Keefe, Harry Stivers (with partner Molly) and Marny Stivers (with spouse Ryan); and the many friends he made along the way.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Virginia Williams, and his brother Tommy Williams. Peter and Kirby have been laid to rest beside them at Seaview Cemetery in Camden.
Contributions in Peter’s honor can be made to the Maine Island Trail Association, a nonprofit that held a special space in his heart.
