Midcoast businesses to join Portland in general strike Jan. 30 to protest ICE
Several Midcoast businesses are listed on a Portland website dedicated to restaurants, food markets and hospitality as participating in a general strike Jan. 30 against ICE.
The Portland Food Map said: "We, the undersigned businesses of Portland, are pledging to exercise our rights and take part in a general strike on Friday the 30th of January, 2026. The restaurants, bars, and shops below plan to show we have the capacity to organize and stand together as a community, to halt the economy of the area and send a message to our administration that we want ICE out of Maine."
Other Midcoast businesses, such as Rock City Coffee, in Rockland are simply announcing their closure on social media, saying, "We will be closed Friday, Jan. 30, in solidarity and support of our immigrant friends and neighbors."
The Norumbega Inn in Camden will also be participating with Ice Out. No breakfast, no bar bites, self check-in/out the inn said on social media.
The businesses are taking part in the National General Strike. Demonstrations are planned, including one reportedly to take place on the Village Green in Camden at 11:30 a.m.
The closed businesses and demonstrations are part of a larger network organizing as a national shutdown protest.
