Panel discussion for writers at Anodyne Book Store
Anodyne Book Shop and Coffee Shop, in Searsport, is sponsoring a panel discussion for writers on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 1 to 3 p.m., titled Working with Editors. The event is free but donations for the panel are welcomed, according to the Book Shop, in a news release.
The panel’s writers/editors will demystify the process of finding and building productive editorial relationships. The group will discuss how to identify compatible editors, practical strategies for creating and building connections with editors, and best practices for learning the most from editors in a respectful, creative partnership.
"Attendees will leave with tools for approaching editors confidently, communicating clearly and recognizing the editing process as an engine for growth," said Anodyne.
The panel features three accomplished mid-coast writers and editors:
Murray Carpenter is the author of Sweet and Deadly; How Coca-Cola Spreads Disinformation and Makes us Sick (MIT Press, 2025). As a journalist focusing on science, health, climate and the environment, he’s reported for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wired, National Geographic, NPR and Maine Public Radio.
Hank Garfield writes both fiction and non-fiction, including Tartabull’s Throw published by Atheneum/Richard Jackson Books. He teaches writing at the University of Maine at Orono. His first writing job was at the Bangor Daily News in 1983. He served as curator for the Maine Limerick Project, which published a slim volume of bawdy verse, Wicked Maine Limericks.
Kathryn Miles, Ph.D., is an award-winning journalist and science writer. Her most recent book is Trailed: One Woman’s Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders, published by Algonquin Books in 2022. She served as professor of environmental studies and writing at Unity College and has taught in several graduate schools and low-residency-MFA programs.
