Maxwell Quartet plays classical music with a folk twist, Nov. 8
Maxwell Quartet to perform Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m., at Hammer Hall, in Camden.
Maxwell includes violinists Conlin Scobie and George Smith, violist Elliot Perks, and cellist Duncan Strachan. In addition to classical, Maxwell plays Scottish folk tunes, "which kind of take on a life of their own," said a news release.
"In the spirit of the genre, we add elements of improvisation, so the performances evolve over time and end up taking on a path of their own,” said the Quartet.
Maxwell’s program includes pieces by Haydn and English Renaissance composer William Byrd.
"And, of course, there will be folk tunes," said Bay Chamber Concerts and Music School.
Maxwell Quartet is brainchild of four close friends who grew up playing folk and classical music together in youth orchestras and music schools across Scotland. The group officially formed in 2010 at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where its founding members met as postgraduate students.
When Maxwell Quartet plays Haydn, the roots of the ensemble’s stylings don’t come from the classical cannon. They come from Scottish folk music. The four members share a commitment to add to the wealth of classical interpretations.
"Maxwell quickly established a reputation for delighting audiences," said Bay Chamber. "Critical acclaim has followed."
