CAMDEN — Two local students have been selected to attend Haystack’s Student Craft Institute, a three-day studio session in May for approximately 70 Maine high school students from schools throughout the state. While there, students work with professional artists to learn about the creative process within a variety of craft media.

Lyra Kalajian and Beatrice Buckley, of the Watershed School, will be among this year’s participants.

More than 2,000 students have taken part in the Student Craft Institute since its inception. Teachers at schools throughout the state are invited to identify one student each, who displays outstanding potential in the arts, to participate in this annual spring program on the Haystack campus. Watershed School was the only school to have two students selected this year.

Haystack Mountain School of Crafts is an international craft school located in Deer Isle. The school offers intensive studio-based workshops in clay, glass, metals, paper, blacksmithing, weaving, woodworking and more.

“This year’s metalsmithing students have been remarkable,” said nominating teacher and metalsmithing instructor Phil Gerard, in a news release. “They are completely self-directed, have developed and are polishing many skills, and doing remarkably creative and elegant work. Lyra and Bea are both in the second-semester metalsmithing program and I'm delighted that they'll have an opportunity to attend one of America's preeminent crafts programs. Thanks to Haystack Mountain School of Crafts for making this program available for Maine high school students!”

Watershed School is an independent high school located in Camden.

Watershed is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, is a Maine State Approved High School, and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).
