Lawrence W. Kimmich, obituary
WALDOBORO — Lawrence W. Kimmich, a long-time resident of Waldoboro, passed away on August 17, 2026, at Coves Edge in Damariscotta.
He was born in New Jersey to Otto and Elizabeth Weston Kimmich on November 29, 1935 and attended school in Tenafly where he played basketball. His summers were spent in Bremen, Maine at his family’s cottage. After graduating from high school, Lawrence continued to come to Maine during summers and enjoyed time on Damariscotta Lake on his skip-jack boat.
In 1954, he began working with Eddie Reed building new and remodeling old homes. He served in the U.S. Army with a tour of South Korea in 1957. Upon his return, he married the love of his life Elizabeth (Betty) Elwell of Orff’s Corner on July 5, 1959 and went back to work with Eddie Reed. Among their projects was the building of the Miller School Waldoboro. Lawrence also built his own home in North Waldoboro.
Upon joining the Carpenters’ Union in 1969, he worked on many different types of construction including setting up machinery at various paper mills which sometimes involved measuring down to a hundredth of an inch. He was also involved in the building of Pen Bay Hospital in Rockport. His favorite project was the construction of the Maine Yankee Power Plant in Wiscasset. Jesse Hilt was his carpool buddy for the commute to and from there.
Lawrence retired in 1997, but kept himself busy mowing, gardening, cutting down trees, or repairing items for neighbors. On summer weekends, he continued to enjoy time at his family cottage on Muscongus Bay, mackerel fishing and having picnics on islands. In the winter, he could be found snowmobiling with the Waldoboro Snow Crawlers. Lawrence was also a member of the Lincoln County Fish and Game Club.
Lawrence was predeceased by his parents; a half-sister, Kathrine Copeland, and half-brother, Raymond Kimmich; his wife of fifty-three years, Elizabeth; and special friend Helen.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah and grandson Zachary, both of Waldoboro; his brother, Robert Kimmich of Greenville; nieces Dawna and Lora; and cousins Anne Siegbert and Tim Weston.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Neal and Cindy Shuman and their family for watching out for Lawrence, helping him with his woodpiles, snow removal, and hours of conversation.
At his request, there will be no services. A private burial at Orff’s Corner Cemetery will be held.
Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
