ROCKPORT — Kenneth Thompson, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2021 at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born September 30, 1933 in Rockland to Eugene and Bertha Thompson, Ken was one of five children and the only boy of the bunch. He grew up in the Midcoast area and attended school in Rockland. After school Ken was drafted into the Army serving honorably and proudly during World War II.

He was very much in love with his wife who he called Tootie. They married on November 22, 1958 in Rockland and went on to have two lovely children.

Throughout Ken’s life he had a few different jobs, but it all started on a lobster boat at the age of five. After Ken got back from serving in World War II, he decided to continue commercial fishing by trawling out of Rockland. After more 30 years of fishing Ken went on to work with Marriners Paving in Rockport and Lie Nielson in Warren, doing finish work on all of the newly made parts. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and children. Ken also enjoyed his time outdoors doing yardwork, landscaping and gardening.

Other than his parents, Ken was predeceased by his grandson Donnie Cayton; three sisters, Lucy Soumela, Grace Stillings, and Glenice Simmons.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Esther “Tootie” Thompson of Rockport; his son, Kenneth Thompson, Jr. and his partner Dana Burton of Rockport; his daughter, Cynthia Cayton and husband Donnie of Warren; his grandson Todd Staples of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; one sister, Jenny Witham of Owls Head; and several nieces and nephews that Ken loved very much.

Ken’s family has chosen to honor and remember his life privately. All who knew him are encouraged to remember him in their own special way.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sussman Hospice House, 40 Anchor Drive, Rockport, ME 04856.
