Kendall Merriam was born and raised in Rockland. He has a history degree from Gordon College and pursued graduate studies in military and maritime history at the University of Maine at Orono and Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Conn. He received grants to study historical research at Colonial Williamsburg and the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

    For the Chef and Staff of the Hartstone Inn

    Can I write this

    so full of Kobe beef

    fed Kirin beer and caressed

    to the ultimate tenderness

    it is no sin after the stone

    is rolled away

    pre-plague we hosted 9

    from Russia, India, Brazil

    and St. George

    lamb and chicken

    Aana’s New Delhi dishes

    kids with toys  

    what a lot of noisy fun

    now so many moved on 

    to North Carolina

    to Heaven

    the Inn is advertising for help

    if I weren’t bound to a walker

    I would apply

    like I did at the Paramount

    when I was sixteen

    as third assistant cook

    at least today

    I could wash a dish or two

    I wouldn’t be ashamed

    the restaurant is so good

    it would be a privilege

    to keep the plates, silverware

    gleaming and shiny

    since our limited celebration

    will allow one guest

    Inna from Russia 

    is coming for dessert

    and you packed four

    why we don’t know 

    but with Prince of Wales

    or Lapsong Souchong

    will make their loveliness 

    go down easy

    with the stone rolled away
