John Magri hired as new Camden Hills ice hockey coach

ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills Regional High School ice hockey program has not seen a change at the helm of the program over the last decade — until now.

After 10 seasons of leading the Windjammers varsity ice hockey team, Karl Enroth has stepped aside and John Magri has been tasked with taking over a program that finished with an 8-11 record last season and exited the playoffs after a 7-2 loss to Presque Isle in the quarterfinals.

The transition should be a smooth transition for the Windjammers, though, as Magri brings a wealth of experience with him into his new position, including past experience with the program.

After playing youth hockey, he played hockey in high school, in college for the University of North Texas and in the Midcoast Recreation Center’s men’s league.

Magri, who started his coaching career before 20-years-old, has served as the goalie coach for the Midcoast Ice Cats high school club team, a coach for the U10, U12, U14, U16 and U18 Maine Coast Skaters Association teams and the U12, U14, U16 and U18 Maine Sternman teams.

He served as an assistant coach for the Windjammer ice program, spent five years as the head coach of the Middleborough High varsity team in Massachusetts and was a coach of the U18 USA Hockey team.

Magri has dedicated additional time to the community as a board member for the Maine Coast Skaters Association and Midcoast Recreation Center.

“I am optimistic that we can create [and] build a hockey culture at Camden Hills Regional High School that holds as its highest tenets, grit, selfless play, 100 percent investment of self, and a true sense of team,” Magri said of his vision for the program. “We will build this one practice at a time, one shift at a time, one game at a time, and one season at a time.”

The team will open the regular season on the road against Presque Isle on Friday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m. with the home opener set for Wednesday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. against John Bapst.
