ROCKPORT — The Camden Hills varsity ice hockey team left the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport with a one-score victory Wednesday, Feb. 12 following its home contest against Gardiner.

The opening period came and went with neither team netting a goal with Gardiner tallying 14 shots compared to just two for the host Windjammers.

Camden Hills head coach John Magri credited his goalkeeper, Jackson Bernier, and Bernier’s amazing play as the reason the game remained scoreless after the opening period.

“I have to give credit to Gardiner for their first period of play,” said Camden Hills head coach John Magri. “The last time we played them they were a very slow no pressure team. They came out in the first period and put the most pressure on our defensemen that they have seen all season.”

In the second period, the Windjammers tallied the lone goal of the contest when Camden Powell scored on a power play off a Levi Guay assist.

“Levi Guay used his speed to get a puck deep into the Gardiner [z]one and his line mate Camden Powell came flying behind him crashing the net and signaled to Guay that he was there,” said Magri. “Guay sent a back handed pass to the sound of Powell’s stick and Powell buried the puck in the net without ever slowing down.”

With neither team netting a goal in the third period, the game finished with a 1-0 score in favor of the hosts.

Bernier finished the night in the goalkeeper net with 20 saves.

Up next for the Windjammers will be a Saturday, Feb. 15 senior night contest against Hampden Academy at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport at 6:40 p.m.

After senior night, Camden Hills will conclude the regular season with a road trip Wednesday, Feb. 19 to challenge John Bapst at 6:30 p.m. in Bangor.

In the Class B North playoff picture, Camden Hills (92.5000 points) sits in second place, behind top-ranked Hampden Academy (99.1204 points).
