Incumbent Sherman Hutchins, a Republican, was challenged this election cycle in the race for State House District 131 by Democrat Veronica Garvey Magnan. 

The district serves the communities of Dedham, Orland, Otis, Penobscot, Prospect, Stockton Springs and Verona Island. 

Magnan, according to her PenBayPilot.com candidate questionnaire, is a retired educator who served as a teacher, principal, superintendent and school board chair. She has volunteered for several organizations and currently serves as the chair of the Sandy Point Congregational Church leadership committee and as a board member for the Maine Ocean School Foundation and Sandy Point Community Club. 

Hutchins did not return his candidate questionnaire, despite repeated requests for its submission.
