Than Hopkins, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Than Thompson Hopkins, 62, passed away peacefully Aug. 29, 2015, at home, surrounded by loved ones, after an extended illness. Than was born Jan. 24, 1953, to E. Frank and Ada Anthony Thompson, on the island that would be her life-long home.
Than grew up on the island where she attended local schools. She was a 1971 graduate of Vinalhaven High School, and was crowned Maine Sea Goddess at the Rockland Lobster Festival in 1970.
Upon graduating, she married the love of her life, Kevin M. Hopkins, and they made their home on Vinalhaven with their three children, Haven H. Stone, Kevin E. "Bub" Hopkins and Sarah E. Poole. Family was everything to Than. Her happiest times were those spent with her husband, kids, grandkids and friends. She will be remembered best by her grandkids for "Camp Grammie Than," where she hosted sleepovers, fire pits and other fun summer activities.
Than loved people. She welcomed both old friends and new into her home. There were many cups of tea consumed with her many friends over the years. She enjoyed playing cards with a close group of friends and hosted a weekly craft club at her home. Along with entertaining family and friends, Than enjoyed reading, knitting, quilting, gardening and volunteering her time on various committees on the island, before her illness.
Than is survived by her husband, Kevin M. Hopkins; their three children, Haven H. Stone and her husband, Chris, of North Haven, Kevin E. Hopkins and his wife, Mary Ann, of Vinalhaven, and Sarah E. Poole and her husband, Harold, of Vinalhaven; her grandchildren, Isaac and Mikael Stone, Ruby and Mitchell Hopkins, Chad and Heidi Guilford, Javin, Isla and very soon-to-be-another Poole. She is also survived by her sister, Faye T. Grant and her husband, Miles; her brother, Frank E. Thompson and his wife, Jean; and her brother-in-law, Hollis Hopkins and his wife, Denise, all of Vinalhaven; as well as several nieces, nephews and special friends.
The family is deeply grateful for the loving care given by Jen Desmond, Karen Webster of Kno-Wal-Lin and especially Angie Olson.
A private service will be held by the family at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bob Gagnon Fund, 22 White Street, Rockland, ME 04841 or the Island Community Medical Center, 15 Medical Center Loop, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
