BELFAST — Herbert Conrad Osgood passed away Aug. 18, 2013, in Belfast. He was born Jan. 26, 1932, at home in Easton, the third son of the late Alfaretta Maria and Harry Lee Osgood. He was known affectionately by his Aroostook friends as "Connie" and downstate as "Herb."

Herb graduated third in his class from Easton High School in 1949 and played basketball in the Eastern Maine tournament in Bangor in 1946, 1948 and 1949. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science (agricultural economics and farm management). He was a member of the Phi Eta Kappa fraternity and the University of Maine Alumni Association. After graduation he taught school in Corinna and Newport. He coached the Corinna Cavaliers high school basketball team to a 19-4 record and Central Maine League Championship in 1956. In 1962, he moved to Belfast and joined the Farmers Home Administration, where he worked for 23 years as county supervisor then district director of the Belfast, Bucksport, Ellsworth, Machias and Calais regions. After leaving FmHA he operated a family farm and potato brokerage business with his brother, Fred, for many years. He made many trips to Easton in his Knickerbocker Beer truck transporting potatoes from "The County" to grocery stores and restaurants in the Belfast area and throughout central Maine.

Herb was a member of the Maine National Guard for 14 years, attaining the rank of captain. He was a basketball referee and was member of the International Board of Basketball Officials serving as president of the local chapter in 1978. He served on the Belfast City Council in the 1980s.

Herb is survived by his three children and six grandchildren; Bruce Osgood and his wife, Laurie, and their daughters, Kathleen, Kristine and Kariann of Belfast, Kimberly Dubois and her husband, Kenneth, and their son, Matthew Brian Flynn of Hudson, N.H., and Marsha Connors and her husband, Joseph, and their son, John, and daughter, Anna, of Bangor. He is also survived by two brothers, Frederick Osgood of Easton and Robert Osgood of Brewer.

Herb was predeceased by a son, Gregory Osgood.

Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave. in Belfast. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 95 Court St. in Belfast. A gathering will follow the service at the Waldo County Shrine Club.
