CUSHING — Herbert George Martin, 89, died Tuesday, March 12, 2024, peacefully at home with his family by his side following a decline in health. Born October 27, 1934, Bert was the son of George and Leda (Waltz) Martin formerly of Warren.

Bert was a graduate of Warren High School and married his beloved wife Elsie in 1954. For more than 40 years, he was a Teamsters truck driver and a member of the Masonic Lodge. One of Bert’s most favorite pastimes was collecting and restoring the old John Deere two-cylinder tractors. He loved spending his time at tractor shows and was a longtime member of the Maine Antique Tractor Club.

But there was nothing Bert loved more than his family. A family man to the core, Bert loved family camping trips and traveling with Elsie, especially their nine trips to Hawaii, several cruises, a European adventure, and many trips to Cape Cod. Bert will be remembered for his love of lobster, his kind heart, his quiet patience, his strong work ethic, and his steady, unfailing love for his family.

Bert is survived by his devoted wife of almost 70 years, Elsie (Chadwick) of Cushing; two children, Randy Martin of Cushing and Pam (John) Heal of Warren; one brother, Carroll Martin of Nobleboro; three grandchildren, Jason Heal of Rockland, Jessica (Jeremy) York of Warren, and Nicholas (Kate) Martin of Thomaston; three great-grandchildren, Madison, Austin, and Bryce; two sisters-in-law, Helen Martin of Waldoboro and Marian Martin of Thomaston; two brothers-in-law, Jerry (Sharon) Chadwick of Warren, and Dick (Jean) Chadwick of Nobleboro; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bert is preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Peggy Martin; three brothers, Howard, Gilbert, and Robert Martin; and two sisters, Faye Dorgan and Patrice Worcester.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the Hospice team, especially Valerie Despres and Regina Knight-Ryder, as well as Dr. Robert Laurence.

A service will be announced at a later date.
