George D. Kibitz, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Captain George D. Kibitz, 89, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2026, at Breakwater Commons in Rockland, surrounded by the echoes of a life well-lived.
Born in City Island, New York, on June 20, 1936, George was the son of George and Rose (Weinberg) Kibitz. After graduating from the City College of New York with a degree in Liberal Arts, he embarked on a life defined by precision and adventure. In 1961, George married the love of his life, Lorette Waselle. Together, they shared 65 years of marriage and raised their two sons, Gregory and Christopher.
George proudly served his country in the United States Army as an active-duty aviator and Senior Intelligence Captain for four years, followed by seven years in the Army Reserve. His passion for flight led him to a career with Trans World Airlines (TWA) starting in 1964. A consummate professional, George was known for his disciplined study and dedication to his craft, ensuring he was the very best pilot he could be. Through his career, he saw the wonders of the world, though he also found great peace on the water.
Upon retiring to Maine, George didn't slow down, he traded the cockpit for the fire truck. He served the South Thomaston Fire Department for 16 years and was a tireless member of the South Thomaston Lions Club, where he was particularly passionate about scholarship fundraising for local students.
An avid outdoorsman, George loved fishing, hunting, and sailing. One of his favorite memories was an incredible journey he shared with his son Christopher and a close friend, sailing from Long Island through the Cape Cod Canal all the way to their new home in South Thomaston.
George was predeceased by his parents and his son Gregory.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorette; his son Christopher; and many other close friends and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Thomaston Lions Club (PO Box 315, South Thomaston, ME 04858) or the South Thomaston Fire Department/Ambulance.
