Flying Shoes Community Dance and Contras, Sept. 5
Take a spin on the dance floor and let your shoes fly at the First Friday Community Dance & Contras, Friday, Sept. 5, at The First Church, 8 Court Street in Belfast.
The intergenerational program begins at 6 p.m., when the All Comers Band warms up and chooses tunes. The band is open to all ages, instruments, and skill levels; a collection of tunes is posted at belfastflyingshoes.org. Chrissy Fowler leads the easy-to-learn Community Dance starting at 6:30 p.m.
"This first hour is great for families with kids, singles, new dancers, and longtime enthusiasts who love the joy of simple folk dances and music by dozens of exuberant local musicians," said Flying Shoes.
This month’s 8 p.m. Contra Dance features Ben Sachs-Hamilton calling, with music by Québécois super group, Genticorum (Pascal Gemme on fiddle, Nicholas Williams on flute and accordion, and Yann Falquet on guitar.)
Sachs-Hamilton hails from Western Massachusetts. He started contra dancing at age 12 and started teaching dances three years later. Since then, he’s called and organized dances across the Northeast, fostering a welcoming and inclusive space for diverse groups of new and experienced dancers, and offering tips on style and safety.
Genticorum last played for the Flying Shoes dance in 2018, but local audiences have appreciated members of the band in many recent appearances, including the Maine Celtic Celebration, Acadia Trad Festival, SongWeavers Retreat, and Bangor Celtic Crossroads.
"Their high-energy Québécois repertoire will lift everyone’s spirits," said Flying Shoes.
Admission is $15-25 for the whole evening. (For just the first hour’s Community Dance, admission is $1 kids/$2 adults.) First Friday FAQ, BFS Community Care Policy, and other info at www.belfastflyingshoes.org
