ROCKLAND — Duane Michael Carr Sr., 56, died Aug. 8, 2015, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., after an extended illness.

Born in Rockland on Jan. 23, 1959, he was the son of Vince and Barbara Vose Carr. He was educated in local schools.

In 1976, Duane enlisted in the United States Army and served with the 3rd Armored Division in Germany.

His first marriage was to Janice Thompson and they had two boys. He later married Valencia Harriman, who died June 4, 2015.

Duane was an active member of the Winslow-Holbrook-Merritt American Legion Post No. One in Rockland and the Rockland Lodge Elks No. 1008. He was an active, proud member and brother to the Exiles Motorcycle Club.

Duane was a happy-go-lucky guy who loved to ride his motorcycle and have fun. Always a comedian and prankster, he loved condiments when he was having fun with chooch and bill. But most of all he was a kind, loving man and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Duane loved family time, holidays and cookouts.

Duane enjoyed his work assisting clients at Coastal Work Shop and BFLI.

On Jan. 14, Duane was diagnosed with liver cancer. Although very sick, he fought a hard battle and was awaiting a liver transplant at the time of his death. His family expressed dismay at being so close to a transplant, but they were proud of the tenacity with which Duane fought.

Duane is survived by two sons, Duane “Mikie” Carr Jr. and his wife, Jaime, and their four children, Ethan, Jaxon, Ziva and Brycen, all of Friendship, and Joseph Carr of Florida; two brothers, William “Bill” Carr Sr. and his wife, Vicki, and Roy Allen all of Rockland; two sisters, Kelly Carr and her husband, Tim Wilson, of Thomaston, and Kim Kuhn and her husband, Joseph, of Rockport; many nieces and nephews; as well as his beloved dog, Sherman, who he thought of as a child.

Per Duane's request, a celebration of life, not a mourning of his death, will be held Saturday, Aug. 22 from 5 to 10 p.m. in the Knox County Ball Room at the Samoset Resort in Rockport. Officers of the Rockland Lodge of Elks No. 1008 will conduct a memorial service at 5 p.m., after which family and friends are invited to continue in fellowship around light food with entertainment provide by Duane's favorite band, Matt and the Barn Burners.

The Carr family is being assisted by Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
