David McCurdy, obituary
David was born on September 13, 1947, in Lubec, Maine. Throughout his life, he was known for his quiet strength, his sense of humor, his mechanical curiosity, his unwavering compassion, and his deep love for his family.
David is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy, whose steadfast love and companionship enriched his later years. Together they shared a life built on mutual respect, laughter, and unwavering support through life's joys and challenges. He was also the proud father of two children, Michael and Trish, who brought him great joy throughout his life. Family was always at the center of who he was.
For more than 50 years, David dedicated his life to caring for others as a respiratory therapist. He graduated from the first class of Respiratory Therapists at New Britain General Hospital. His career took him from major medical centers, including Yale New Haven Hospital, to small rural hospitals throughout Maine, where he provided expert care and comfort to countless patients and their families. Those who worked alongside him respected his knowledge and calm presence, while patients appreciated not only his skill but also his kindness. To many, David was far more than a healthcare professional—he was a reassuring voice during some of life's most difficult moments. The lives he touched over five decades stand as a lasting testament to a career devoted to service.
Outside of work, David found freedom on two wheels. From the time he was a young man in his twenties, he could usually be found tinkering with a motorcycle, always looking for a way to make it run a little better. Over the years, his passion grew into a love of Harley-Davidsons, and many of his happiest memories were made on the open road with friends.
A family friend affectionately nicknamed him "Rainman" because it seemed that whenever David planned a motorcycle ride, rain was sure to follow. The nickname became part of the stories that friends and family loved to tell, and David took it in stride with a smile. Those rides represented more than a hobby—they were adventures, friendships, and moments of pure joy.
David also believed in serving his community. He was an active member of his local Rotary Club, where he enjoyed the fellowship and the opportunity to give back to others. Another lifelong interest was amateur (ham) radio, a hobby that connected him with friends near and far and reflected his curiosity, technical skills, and enjoyment of learning.
At home, David shared a special bond with the family's beloved Maine Coon cat, whose companionship brought him comfort and many quiet moments of happiness. Anyone who knew David understood that this cherished feline held a very special place in his heart.
David will be remembered for the quiet difference he made in so many lives. Whether helping a frightened patient take their next breath, lending a hand to a friend, talking over the airwaves, or enjoying the freedom of the open road, he approached life with humility, dedication, and a generous heart.
He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy; his children, Michael and Trish; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with other family, friends, former colleagues, and fellow Rotarians who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.
The family finds comfort in knowing that David is now at peace, free from pain, and forever riding with the wind at his back.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 81 Court St., in Belfast.
