Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation issues a Community Vision Report
The Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation has completed its Curtis Island Community Vision Report, describing that it is a comprehensive document that captures the collective aspirations of Camden residents for the future of Curtis Island.
The report, a culmination of months of community engagement, outlines a shared vision for preserving the island's historical significance, natural beauty, and unique sense of tranquility, according to a news release from the Foundation.
Michael Skaling, Foundation president, expressed his enthusiasm for a common theme of the visioning process, stating in the release, "For me, the great appeal of the island is the magic of its atmosphere, not unlike the aura felt when one experiences wilderness, where uncertainty and vulnerability are acutely felt, and nature dominates."
He continued:
"During the winter of 2025, over 80 Camden residents participated in the Curtis Island Community Visioning process. Through workshops and an online survey, participants shared their thoughts on the future of Curtis Island, highlighting what they cherish most and expressing their concerns. The report synthesizes these insights into major themes creating a cohesive vision that will help guide the island's preservation and restoration efforts.
"Preservation and Restoration: A Commitment to Camden's Maritime History and Nature
"A central theme of the report is the community's strong desire to preserve Curtis Island's historical and natural aspects. Participants envision the island as a sanctuary where the past and present coexist harmoniously. The iconic lighthouse and its surrounding structures are to be meticulously restored, serving as living examples that offer insights into Camden's maritime heritage and the lives of the lighthouse keepers.
"Managed Access: Balancing Serenity and Public Enjoyment
"The report emphasizes the importance of managing access to Curtis Island to maintain its serenity and prevent overuse. Suggestions include promoting sustainable practices, such as using non-motorized boats for access, and limiting the number of visitors to protect the island's fragile ecosystems. This approach ensures that Curtis Island remains a haven for wildlife and a place of solitude for all who visit.
"Education and Community Involvement: Fostering Stewardship
Education and community involvement are at the heart of the vision for Curtis Island. The report suggests plans for educational programs that engage school children, historians, and community members in the island's stewardship. These initiatives aim to cultivate a sense of shared responsibility and pride in the island's upkeep, ensuring future generations appreciate its significance.
"Financial Sustainability and Governance: Ensuring Long-Term Preservation
"The report highlights the need for a robust financial approaches to support ongoing maintenance and restoration efforts. It calls for exploring fundraising opportunities and partnerships to establish a sustainable financial model. A collaborative governance approach, involving both the Town of Camden and the Curtis Island Lighthouse Foundation, is proposed to ensure transparent and inclusive decision-making.
"A Vision of Balance and Harmony
"In essence, the Curtis Island Community Vision Report presents a vision of balance—between preservation and access, history and modernity, solitude and community. The community is committed to ensuring that Curtis Island remains a cherished asset for future generations, a place where the beauty of nature and the echoes of history can be experienced and appreciated by all.
